Hi, I’m Sam — and I’m an Activity Leader at Holiday Camp. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be leading STEM experiments, dodgeball tournaments, and glitter-fuelled arts and crafts sessions with a group of amazing kids, I would’ve laughed. But here I am — and I absolutely love it.
Starting from Scratch (and Finding My Confidence)
After finishing university, I wasn’t sure what came next. I’d always enjoyed volunteering with children, but didn’t see myself as “qualified enough” to work with them professionally.
That changed the day I applied for a Holiday Camp role. I saw the ad on Instagram, filled out the application, and by the end of the week I was sitting in my first training session — excited and nervous in equal parts.
Training That Actually Helps
The onboarding was a breath of fresh air. It wasn’t just theory — we learned practical tips, behavioural strategies, and what to do if a child has a meltdown mid-art session (spoiler: keep calm and offer stickers).
I felt prepared, supported, and empowered.
A Typical Day in the Life
I arrive early, help set up the rooms, check in with the Site Lead, and greet children as they arrive. Throughout the day, I might:
- Lead a rocket launch challenge
- Coach team-building games
- Support quieter children during story time
- Calm nerves, encourage curiosity, and make memories
By the end of the day, I’m tired but proud. Every day is different — and that’s what keeps it exciting.
